Which Five People Surround You Most?

Jim Rohn once said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

I’m guessing some of us have thought about this over the years? Maybe a lot? Maybe deeply and intentionally so?

Interestingly Jim Rohn’s quote didn’t say “free” time. So I interrupt his message to mean it’s all people we interact with – home, work, friends, neighbors, volunteering, activities, sports, and basically all human interactions. Which five people seem to be in your immediate sphere, all the time?

As I’ve gone through different stages and phases of life, this concept of who I intentionally surround myself with seems to matter more and more.

This holiday break, my husband and I have spent countless hours together. A little different than our normal routine and schedules with work, family, activities, and whatnot.

And probably no surprise – even to those of you who don’t know both of us – we are thoroughly enjoying each other’s company.

A close business acquaintance frequently says to her own grown children, “Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future.” I love this! My friends and I talk about what this means in our own lives, and as we observe our children’s friendships and choices on how they spend their time.

There’s so much here that quickly translates to business. Current and future clients we interact with. Those we instantly click with and love working with. And vice versa.

As we prepare for 2024 (just days away!), let’s take the time to really think about the five people we spend the most time with. Literally, overall. Or, broken down between personal and professional, or some other way that works well for you. Do these people have your back? Do you have theirs? Do they lift you up? Encourage you? Accept you for who you are? Even if they also push you to be a better version of yourself?

The Five People Who Surround You

Only you know if these are the best five to be the closest five to you – for now and for the new year and for all you want to be and do and achieve in this life. Only you know if the relationships are built on mutual trust and respect. Only you know if any of these five would better belong in your top 100 list, not your top five coveted spots. It can be a heavy topic. That is introspective and reflective and exciting and joyful.

Happy almost New Year!
